MPD Investigating Mississippi Avenue Fatal Crash
The Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit (MCIU) is investigating a multi‑vehicle traffic fatality that occurred in Southeast.
On Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at approximately 8:14 a.m., Seventh District officers responded to the 900 block of Mississippi Avenue, Southeast, for the report of a multi‑vehicle crash. Upon arrival, officers located an overturned 2027 Nissan Rogue, a 2021 Nissan Rogue, and three parked, unoccupied vehicles with damage. The female operator of the overturned Nissan Rogue sustained critical injuries. The adult female front‑seat passenger and two juvenile passengers in the same vehicle sustained minor injuries. The adult female operator of the second Nissan Rogue, along with two juvenile passengers, also sustained minor injuries. DC Fire and EMS responded and transported all injured parties to local hospitals. Despite all lifesaving efforts, the female operator with critical injuries was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The preliminary investigation revealed that the operator of the 2027 Nissan Rogue suffered a medical emergency, causing her to slump over the wheel while the vehicle remained in motion. The front‑seat passenger attempted to regain control of the vehicle but was unsuccessful, resulting in a collision with the 2021 Nissan Rogue that was making a right turn from southbound 10th Place, Southeast, onto the westbound lane of the 900 block of Mississippi Avenue, Southeast. The impact caused the 2021 Nissan to strike a parked vehicle, resulting in a cascading chain reaction involving two additional parked, unoccupied vehicles. The 2027 Nissan continued westbound before overturning and coming to rest.
The decedent has been identified as 57-year-old Renee Pope, of Southwest, D.C.
This crash remains an ongoing investigation. Anyone who has knowledge of this incident should call the police at (202) 727-9099 or text your tip to the Department’s TEXT TIP LINE at 50411.
